Woodford United 0-0 FC Peterborough
(FCP win 2-1 on penalties)
The Green Army took a trip to the Midlands this week for a Les Underwood Cup clash, and it was nothing short of dramatic.
A slight scramble for the travelling fans as the match kicked off 15 minutes earlier than planned, thanks to warnings of an impending torrential downpour. Rumour has it, it was the tears of a Green Army fan fuming over a recent Radio Mastermind scandal!
The game itself was largely one-way traffic, with FC Peterborough dictating play and clearly the only side pushing for a win. However, a heavy downpour left the pitch more suited for mud wrestling than football, and the tricky conditions impacted the quality of play.
Despite FCP’s dominance, clear-cut chances were hard to come by. Micky rattled the crossbar in the first half, and Atif couldn’t convert a golden opportunity in the second. The stalemate meant penalties were inevitable—and that’s where the real drama unfolded.
Penalty shootout:
Woodford stepped up first, but “Safe Hands” Shaz made an excellent save to set the tone. Zahid confidently buried FCP’s first effort straight down the middle.
What followed was a tense series of misses and saves. Both Ruben and Devonte had chances to seal it for FCP, but nerves got the better of them. Then, with the weight of the Green Army on his shoulders, Sultan Musa strode to the spot. Calm and composed, he waited for the keeper to commit before slotting home the decisive penalty.
Cue the celebrations! Special mention goes to Sarunas, whose heroic goalkeeping performance throughout the match and in the shootout ensured FCP’s place in the next round.
Could this be the year silverware finds its way back to the Green Army? Confidence is high!
